FROM THE CANAL SIDE TO THE CHURCH PEWS

Think you need a coastline for a sea shanty? Think again. Coming to Weddington from the landlocked heart of North Warwickshire, the Hawkesbury Trawlermen are bringing the spirit of the high seas to the “cut.”

Named after the Greyhound Pub at Sutton Stop—where the bridge is definitely too low for a trawler—this group of mates boasts a collective age of over 700 years and a repertoire of rousing songs that could wake the dead (or at least the canal carp).

Why You Should Come Along

  • Maritime Magic (Minus the Salt): Hearty harmonies and sea songs from the most unlikely “sailors” in the Midlands.
  • Folk Royalty: Featuring hosts and regulars from the Atherstone, Bedworth, and Nuneaton Folk Clubs.
  • Posh Grub: Enjoy the music with a glass of fizz and a selection of canapés—a bit of class to go with the canal-side frivolity.
  • A Good Laugh: With seven centuries of life experience between them, the “Crew” knows how to tell a tale and keep a room smiling.

“We’re miles from the ocean, but only a pint away from a good song. Join us for an afternoon of music that’s as deep as the Oxford Canal (give or take a few feet).”
