We are delighted that you are considering Christening. This page gives some general information about Christening, but if you would like to speak to us please contact the parish office.
What is Christening?
A Christening is a celebration in which an individual begins their journey of faith, either by publicly declaring their commitment to their faith in Christ or in the case of children, by their parents and godparents making a declaration on their behalf. In doing this, the person being christened joins the Christian family, the Church, and shares symbolically in the death and resurrection of Jesus.
Who can be Christened?
Anyone who wants to make a commitment to trust and follow Jesus may be Christened. The Church of England, like many other Christian denominations, Christens children on the understanding that those children will be brought up in the Christian faith through the teaching and example of parents, godparents and members of the local church community.
During the Christening service, parents and godparents declare their intention to help the child to “walk in the way of Christ” and to “take their place within the life and worship of Christ’s Church”.
When are Christening service’s held?
At St Nicolas Church Christening services are held on the 4th Sunday of every month, during our 10.30am service. This is because Christening is a public declaration of becoming part of the Church family, and it is important that the Church congregation is there to support and welcome the newest member of the Church family.
Instead of a Christening service you may wish to consider having a ‘Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child’. In this service you thank God for the gift of your child and the child is blessed. If you do choose to have a Thanksgiving Service, you may also have a Baptism service at a later date.
Where can I find more information about Christening?
For more information about Christening please visit the Church of England’s Christening website, where you will find information for parents, godparents and invited guests.
How to book
To book at St Nicolas Church you need to live in the parish or be a regular worshipper at the Church.
When you contact us we will arrange for you to attend a Christening preparation meeting which normally takes place on a Saturday morning. This meeting is an informal opportunity to find out more about Christening. In the meantime, if you don’t already attend services we strongly encourage you to come and find out for yourself about St Nicolas by attending any of our services. This is because an important part of Christening is about joining the Church family.
Once you are ready to take the next step please contact the office again. We will then discuss a date for a Christening with you and arrange a second preparation meeting.
Please contact the Parish Office for more information or to make a booking for a Christening preparation meeting.
